Autonomous AI Revolutionizes Cancer Detection

The “Autonomous AI for Cancer Detection” project, a major collaboration between ScreenPoint Medical, Radboud University Medical Center (RUMC) and Thirona, is set to transform the landscape of cancer detection from 2025 to 2028. Supported by the European Fund for Regional Development (ERDF), the project aims to integrate autonomous AI into medical imaging to accelerate early cancer detection while reducing the intense workload on healthcare professionals.

One of the key technical pillars of the project is Thirona’s development of automated bronchoscope route planning for lung biopsies. This innovation aim to save physicians roughly 20 minutes per case and increase the diagnostic yield of lung cancer biopsies by 20% on average. Collectively, these advancements target an increase in patient survival rates by catching cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages, while significantly lowering healthcare costs through more efficient hospital workflows.
