Thirona Joins Forces to Accelerate Early Lung Cancer Detection with Autonomous AI
We are proud to announce our collaboration with ScreenPoint Medical and Radboud University Medical Center (RUMC) on the "Autonomous AI for Cancer Detection" project from 2025 to 2028. Supported by the European Fund for Regional Development (ERDF), this initiative is set to transform the oncology landscape. By integrating autonomous AI into medical imaging, the project aims to accelerate early cancer detection and reduce the intense workload on healthcare professionals, ensuring faster, more accurate diagnoses.
A core pillar of this partnership is Thirona’s development of automated bronchoscopic route planning for lung biopsies, enabled by AI analysis of thoracic images. Our goal is to automate the route planning by generating detailed anatomical data and calculating navigation paths for clinicians. By displaying AI-driven navigation routes in real time and projecting them onto intra-operative images during bronchoscopic procedures, we aim to provide clinicians with actionable guidance to support accurate access to target lung nodules.
This innovation aims to save physicians approximately 20 minutes per case, while expected to increase the diagnostic yield of lung cancer biopsies by 20% on average. By capturing cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages, these advancements will help improve patient survival rates and reduce overall healthcare costs through more efficient hospital workflows.
